What the Trojans lacked in offense up in the East Bay, they made up for in earnest on the other side of the football. The team combined to force a myriad of turnovers, two of which came deep in Cal’s own side of the field which we converted into quick scores. And, how about Jack Jones rising to the occasion for this game? It was the type of game he is capable of and should be a big confidence booster looking into the challenges of next week. Being that we have a short week here, and with kickoff less than 24 hours from now, let’s talk Wazzu.
I’ll be honest. I’m nervous for this one. We’re beat up and heading to Eastern Washington on a Friday night. Washington State has a lot to prove and Coach Leach is a very good offensive mind. The sold-out contest will kick off with temperatures in the mid 60’s and some rain is expected in the second half. All the weather and hype aside, Wazzu can play. Quarterback Luke Falk has outpaced Darnold this year, but nobody is talking about him. Take a look at the stats below for the QB’s:
Falk: 130-169, 1378 Yards, 14 TD’s, 1 INT
Darnold: 98-146, 1225 Yards, 9 TD’s, 7 INT
This will be a defining game when we look back on the season overall. Once again, USC controls their destiny at this point. We’ve made it through the first four games, and it’s up to us to go out and win. Given some critics have said we don’t quite pass the eye test so far, it would do us a lot of good to win this game by two scores, not that anyone in the ESPN offices would be up late enough to see it happen. Most importantly, we need to see some offense. Washington State is a high scoring unit and will put points on the board for sure. If we get into a shootout with them, we’ll see what Darnold is made of for sure. I think we’ll have a really good idea of who we are as a team come Saturday morning. Until then for us out east, we’ll wait for the first play of the first “late game” of the year.
FIGHT ON
